How to Keep Your Home Cool in Summer

As we approach July, we’re truly in the midst of summer which means only one thing- its time to cool down our houses! In the UK, our properties are built from substantially thicker materials than homes in other countries, which means that we have to find alternative ways to cool them down. Here at We Buy Any House we have compiled our top tips on how to keep your home cool in summer.

Close Your Blinds:

Keeping your blinds closed is a great way to achieve a cooler house- especially if you have windows that are north or west-facing. This is because the sun will penetrate heavily through your windows, especially if they are facing specific directions. Although it may be tempting to let the sunlight into your home, you will inevitably end up with a room that is extremely hot. Another great tip is to find curtains that are black–out, so they shield your interior from the harsh summer sun.

Open Windows and Doors at the Coolest Times:

You may think that it’s a good idea to keep your windows and doors at all times throughout the day, however, this is probably one of the worst things you can do. Not only will you inevitably end up letting lots of bugs and insects into your home, but you will essentially just be letting warm air circulate around your home throughout the day. A great way to combat this is to open doors and windows early in the morning or late at night- when the air is as cool as possible.

Unplug Unused Appliances:

Normally, we allow appliances to run in our house without thinking of the heat that is generated when doing this. Instead, it’s a good idea to keep all appliances that aren’t being used unplugged, as this way you can stop them from generating any further heat and and warming up the room which they are in. It’s also a good idea to not charge any appliances overnight such as your phone, as this can cause the room to become warmer and therefore more unbearable to sleep in.

Invest in Air Conditioning:

If you live in an area that is prone to heatwaves and intense summer heat, then you may want to think about ways in which you can combat this permanently. Although it may seem expensive, investing in an air conditioning system is the perfect way to make sure you have an instantaneous way to cool down you home and regulate a bearable temperature in your home.

Swap Your Bedsheets:

Particularly in the UK, we ensure our bedding is the thickest that it can be- especially throughout the harsh winter months. However, throughout summer, it can be a literal nightmare trying to get a good night’s sleep when you are overheating. Therefore, it’s a good idea to switch over your bedsheets, and ensure that you have put perhaps a thin sheet to keep your body temperature regulated throughout the night.
