The Different Types of Deer Fences for Your Property

At least 56% of American Farmers across the country lose billions of dollars every year due to crop damage caused by weather and wildlife.

Even if you’re not a farmer, deer can still damage your property. It’s not uncommon for deer to eat your flowers and shrubs if you live in the country, even if you’re not a farmer. If you live in the country, it’s not unusual for deer to make a meal out of your flowers and bushes and that is why so many turn to for the best fencing solutions.

Deer fences made of wire

In the past, the most popular fencing solution was metal wire fencing. It’s affordable and easy to install since it’s attached to vertical fence posts. However, over time, this type of fence can rust and fall apart. It can even hurt deer.

If you want to use metal fencing, it’s better to choose the PVC coated type. It won’t rust and won’t be chewed up by animals.

A hex web fence has a hexagonal pattern that’s almost invisible from a distance. A welded wire fence and a fixed knot fence have square patterns.

Fencing made of polypropylene mesh

The fence material polypropylene is a type of plastic, which is why it is also known as poly mesh fencing. Polypropylene fencing has a square pattern like a welded wire fence, but it is made of plastic.

This material is more affordable and easier to work with than metal fencing, which makes it the best choice for a DIY deer fence. All you need to do is attach the mesh to the vertical fence posts.

In the right conditions, plastic fencing can last 15 years. To make it last even longer, choose a polypropylene material with a high breaking load.

Fencing made of wood for privacy

If you want to keep deer out of your yard, you can install wooden privacy fences. These fences are more expensive, but they can also serve as normal yard fencing.

Deer fences usually need to be eight feet tall, but it’s okay to use a shorter wooden fence. If deer can’t see through the fence, they’ll avoid the area. They can’t spot predators on the other side, so they won’t try to leap over it.

Fencing made of chain link

When you have pets or young children, you can also use chain link fencing to keep deer from your property.

Using this fence requires deeper post holes to support it, so it’s more expensive than other deer fence options.
